Free Will

RMTheSupreme

This is a specific debate about free will. I will take the position that humans have free will (in the libertarian sense of 'could have chosen otherwise') and furthermore that the argument that free choices would amount to random or unexplained choices is not a compelling argument. Say Bob is presented with the choice between chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream. Bob chooses vanilla. Now surely there is a reason why Bob chose vanilla. I maintain that the reason why Bob chose vanilla as o...

The Problem of Suffering

theodebater42
tfroitz1

I maintain that the existence of suffering does not disprove the existence of an all loving, all powerful, and all knowing God. I will defend this claim by proposing a version of the free will defense, namely that it is unjust for God to force people to be in union with Him in heaven and therefore He must allow people to journey towards a relation with Him. This free journey though allows for people to deviate and therefore commit actions that result in suffering. More can be said about all of t...

Free Will is Reasonable

theodebater42
philochristos

I will define free will as the ability to have chosen otherwise within the same given circumstances. I am arguing that belief in free will is reasonable. Our experience of our willing seems to indicate that we have free will. The typical arguments against free will are flawed and are less convincing than the evident experience that we have free will. Con side will have to give an overwhelming argument for why determinism is more plausible than free will....

God's Existence

I am arguing that it it is logically plausible that God (meaning a supreme creator of the universe) exists. My argument is a version of the argument from contingency: If something is contingent then that means that it exists due to more fundamental components of reality. For example, the shape of a bottle is contingent upon the matter and energy that comprise it. So here is the argument (informally presented) 1. Things are contingent upon more fundamental components of reality, until...
